The art of Mannerism painting began in the 16th century in Europe in the later years of the Italian Renaissance. Thhis form of painting continued till 1580 until it was slowly replaced by the Baroque style of painting. But in some places, Northern Mannerism painting continued well into the 17th century. Mannerism basically entails the combination of a variety of approaches to painting styles, such as those which were influenced by Naturalism painting practiced by Leonardo Da Vince, Michelangelo, and Raphael. The school of Mannerism painting was also seen as an answer to the Naturalism art form.

Mannerism painting has been largely debated upon by historians over the ages. While some believe that the Italian Mannerists were the only ones who practiced this art form, there is another school of thought which includes The Antwerp Mannerists in this art form as well. This group of painters practiced in the late Gothic period in Northern Europe between 1500 and 1530.

Early sign of the art from was noticed among the students of Andrea Del Sarto, Jacopo Da Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino. The figures painted in their paintings have elongated poses which are precariously balanced. The paintings are done in irrational settings and seem to possess theatrical lighting. Most of the early painters of this form had matured during the time of the High Renaissance and Mannerism painting was widely understood to be a reaction or exaggerated form of it.

Some of the greatest painters of this movement were Jacopo da Pontormo, Rosso Fiorentino, Agnolo Bronzino, Tintoretto and Alessandro Allori.
