When Mali coolly announces that he is abandoning school to go to America to become a writer, Jagan's fatherly feelings are thrown into still greater confusion. More details R.K Narayan’s The Vendor of Sweets, like his other books, is composed in simple, lucid English that is easy to read and understand without having to retrace and pages or steps. That said, the message that is being focused on is delivered to the readers in the simplest possible manner.
The main characters in this story are Jagan (the sweet vendor) and his son Mali. More stress is laid on the issues arising from the generation gap between father and son. Narayan in his superb style narrates the principled life-story of Jagan, contrasting the contemporary and new age life-style of Mali.
The conflict between the old and young generation, their ideals and the generation gap makes 'Vendor of Sweets' a memorable story. The underlying theme of the East and the West is also very well highlighted.
