More details The Old man and the Sea,is what probably won Ernest Hemingway the Nobel Prize in Literature. A senile fisherman, having gone more than 85 days without having caught a big fish, is not low on confidence. With the help of a neighbourhood boy, he is out in the ocean again in his small boat, also called a skiff. This time he hooks a huge marlin, a fish so big that it pulls the little boat along. An epic tussle ensues between man and fish that forms the crux of the book.

One the major achievements of the book is the economic use of words, and yet nothing is left unsaid. The book may seem to be a slim novella, but the conciseness contains an ocean of storytelling. One of the subtle messages of the book is man's dignity and courage against the elements of nature.

The book was a last hurray for Hemingway, a wonderful display of his precise journalistic style, and his gift of storytelling. Many have tried to emulate the style of the great writer but as some writers have mentioned: Hemingway has set such a severe standard that it is hard to follow his path.
