More details The Mystic Masseur is an early novel by V.S.Naipaul and one of his most lightest. The humour runs through the veins of this book, very unusual for a Naipaul novel. First published in 1957, the setting is reminiscent of the malgudi world of R.K.Narayan. Only the setting is Trinidad.

Ganesh,a failed school teacher, with his room filled from corner to corner with piles of books, becomes by able deception a masseur and then an author. My favourite part of the book is when he cons his greedy father-in-law to his financial benefit. Considering the nature and purpose of the greedy man, you can only laugh than feel sorry for him.

A treat for those not accustomed to the Naipaul lightheartedness and his hold over the language,as this book is testimony of what Naipaul would later become.
