More details The Final Diagnosis is the kind of novel after reading which you will thank god that you got the opportunity to do so. Yes, it’s a masterpiece by Arthur Hailey, the author who gave us Airport, Moneychangers, Wheels and the list continues.
The Final Diagnosis is the story of Dr. Pearson, a 65 year old forensic practitioner. He is old and he is tired. He doesn’t really get along with the young staff and is obsessed about using his old methods. The hospital is tired of him and they want him to quit, but they can’t say so to a veteran employee who has given them so much in his days. What follow is hospital politics and powerful subplots, which are all somehow intertwined to John Pearson’s story.
Arthur Hailey induces some powerful and beautiful storytelling. He takes you slow through the hospital corridors, the politics, the characters and their varied personalities. The first 50 pages just introduce the new characters. This can irritate you, because during this point of time, the story is actually going nowhere! But I can’t cut points for that. If not for such detailed character descriptions, they would have appeared bleak in the latter part.
But the best part about this book is the character Dr. John Pearson. Such subtle writing of sequences and such detailed descriptions of little actions which speak a lot about the character, John Pearson is sure to win your heart. It is difficult to create an old character as a protagonist. You have to seduce the readers into learning about its niceties, and Mr. Hailey does that brilliantly.
The book is a must read as it talks about one of the greatest fictional characters created ever. I am sure it will make you cry in the end.

More details Hospitals are places that usually one associates with health, hygience and life. There is however a downside to it too. There are ego clashes, conflicts, personal issues, and so on. So what happens when ironically a hospital in a small place starts dying?

Kent O’ Donnell is the Chief of Surgeon and the President of the Three Counties Hospital’s medical board. He takes on the immense responsibility of the management of the hospital and balancing the art of practicing medicine. The story however is largely focused on the ageing pathologist Joe Pearson whose expertise had decreased with his age and the new pathologist David Coleman who is fresh out of the world brimming with knowledge. All through the story there is a struggle between the doctors and Pearson. The story however, is not about pathology alone. There are love affairs, hard decisions, the responsibility of playing God and the ultimate duty of doctors; that of saving lives.

Arthur Hailey’s books are very descriptive and detailed. However, one always gets the feeling of an information overload after reading his books and this book would be much the same for a layman without much medical knowledge. However, for someone who loves medical fiction, this book is one of the must-reads. By the end of the book, there is nothing that we would not know about managing a hospital, and the difficulties faced by doctors, patients, nurses, and hospitals.
