In this masterpiece, India's preeminent novelist introduces a character not unlike himself, a compulsively engaging raconteur-" They call me Talkative Man. Some affectionately shorten it to TM: I have earned this title, I suppose, because I cannot contain myself. My impulse to share an experience with others is irresistible." As a young journalist struggling to establish a reputation, TM is always on the lookout for a good story. The one he shares with the reader this time is about the...

I haven't read any of his before -- but he spins a beautifully written tale about fictional Malgundi in India, village life, the trials and tribulations of the Station Master.

One day a stranger arrives -- supposedly working on a UN project. Mystery (and lots of interest) abound and gradually parts of the stranger's story unravel as the stranger sets about seducing the young grand daughter of the Librarian.

However, his past catches up with him and his pattern of philandering is exposed -- and Talkative Man is instrumental in shipping the stranger back to at least one wife.

The book evokes the scenes, smells and foods of India -- and the way things generally don't function too efficiently!! The writer's wry sense of humour makes it very enjoyable.

Though a short novella, Talkative Man does not lack in its entertainment value. The main character is an ordinary, wealthy journalist. He follows a set routine, daily: post articles in the post box, have a talk with people in a tea shop, go to library and house. One day, he meets a man from an unknown land called "Timbuctoo", another of Narayan's creations, the land being similar to the US. The man seems to have come for an official duty for UN and, seeing the calmness of the place, decides to stay here for his work.
Herein comes a twist about the man’s intentions and the journalist’s approach to solving the “problem”.
The story is simple, and you will definitely love it. The apt detailing makes this a good read and can be read for the calmness with which Narayan writes his story, as a critic rightly points out.
