More details Ice Candy Man by Bapsi Sidhwa is the story of partition of India. Lenny the narrator is a young Parsi girl who lives in Lahore.
The novel brings forth a group of friends from different walks of life who co-exist peacefully and happily until the unfortunate declaration of partition. Following the partition, the emotions and attitudes of people are changed overnight. A young mind grows with the horrid atrocities around, getting to know the harsh realities about religion, sexuality and gender discrimination, in the times of chaos. It sees friendships being broken, deception being the way of life and betrayals being the order of the day. It climaxes with the rescue of a fallen woman, redeeming her honor and saving her from exploitation that would have otherwise been her life ahead.
This is an amazing book that describes the horror's of the partition of India. A beautiful paced novel shows you the emotions of a girl that discovers the raw side of life. The readers will be instantly connected to the Lenny. Overall a great read.
