More details I had loved this book, until I saw the movie Three Idiots. Though the storyline and characters are almost the same, the movie is something else. Despite the movie being based on this book, I feel that this is the first time that I find the movie adaptation is much much better than the book.

All said and done, Bhagat has done a good job. The book can be picked up and enjoyed by anyone. The story is simple and the characters can be identified with. You do not need to be a person who enjoys high brow literature to read his works.

More details Five Point is a grade given in the IIT for the below average students and unfortunately the three main leads namely Hari, Ryan and Alok fall in this category. The novel ā€œFive Point Someoneā€ revolves around the simple Hari, the bookish Alok, the brave Ryan and their escapades at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. The story also deals with the subject of love through the love story of Hari and Neha and includes a bad guy called Professor Cherian who makes their lives miserable. He makes the three friends pay dearly for their mischief and antics. The end is an ā€œall’s well that ends wellā€ kind of situation where everyone has realized their mistakes and has moved on.

The book is written in a simple and lucid manner and the characters are portrayed in a very realistic style. The book is fast paced and the author uses the conversational style for writing in addition to the lingo which is characteristic to those who come from the institution. Bhagat’s narrative is peppered with several punch lines that are quite funny. It’s a light and enjoyable read.

More details Five Point Someone is the debut novel of Chetan Bhagat, an alumnus of IIT, Delhi and IIM, Ahmedabad. It is a light-hearted narrative about the life of three ā€˜average’ guys at IIT, Delhi, 3 pals-ready to stake their careers for one another; and, the 3 with some of the lowest GPA`s. The trio not only struggles to cope up with the level of education at IIT but also manage to have some hair-raising incidents in trying to beat the system. It’s a story truly describing how things can go wrong and messed up if one is not attentive enough.
The characters Hari, Ryan and Alok are interesting and un-IIT like. The story is fast paced filled with humour and there are no dull moments. Bhagat keeps the language conversational and has the quality of keeping the reader glued to the book. It connects instantaneously to college graduates and the ones living in hostels.
It brings out a lot of issues in the over pressurizing, exceedingly competitive education system in India in general. It also makes a good point of listening to one’s own self. It is amazingly unconventional and a fabulous story, a must read for everyone following their dreams.

More details What not to do at IIT? This is the byline of this book that made waves in India when it was released; Five point someone. One of the few books by Indian authors that needs no introductions. A book that attacked everything wrong about the Indian system of Education and delivered what it promised; the youngsters to question what they were doing in life and the validity of the education that they were receiving.

Hari, Ryan, and Alok are students who cram and slave for IIT and successfully manage to get into it too. They become friends out of mutual support for each other on their first night and thenceforth follow their adventures during their four years at IIT. The whole book is written from the point of view of Hari, who thus seems to be the protagonist, though Ryan is certainly the most attractive of the trio. Through their adventures the book describes the power of friendship, the desperation that Indian students face, the unfairness of education in India, love, mistakes, and generally about how messed up life can become if one takes the system for granted.

Chetan Bhagat’s style of writing is funny with heavy use of sarcasm, irony, and satire. He does not use high-level language, since his aim is to make more number of people read his novels. Though the book received heavy criticism for its liberal dose of adult themes, the book was a smashing hit amongst the young population of India. The hit movie ā€˜Three Idiots’ was based on this novel.

More details Chetan Bhagat(an ex IITian) doesn’t write about the techniques of getting entrance to IIT, instead the book Five Point Someone is ‘What not to do at IIT’. With his enviable style of new age storytelling, Chetan recounts the tale of three friends and their experiences at IIT Kanpur.

Alok, Ryan and Raju have joined the Indian Institute of Technology for their own reasons but that doesn’t stop them from developing into fast friends. They settle down into the stern academic system and devise their own methods to beat the unfair system which prevents them from having parties, watching movies or playing sports. Meanwhile, Alok falls in love with the daughter of his professor (a principled man who believes in survival of the fittest-and even drives his son to suicide). A plan to impress his perspective father in law goes haywire as Alok and his pals find themselves on a cliffhanger. Will they be able to pass the test of life?

The author adapts an intriguing approach to his narration and the language is lucid. The punchlines are excellent and the storyline gripping. It also provides a great message for the educational community. However, one drawback of the novel is rapid transitions from reality to fantasy. Moreover, the character of Ryan is too fantastic to be true. Even then, the novel is fun-filled and a pleasant light read!
