More details Devdas; a romance novel, a tragic love a story, 15 times portrait on silver screen, one of the classic tale (1917) by one of the greatest Bengali writer of all time Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay.
After his wealthy family prohibits him from marrying the woman (Paro) he is in love with, Devdas Mukherjee's life spirals further and further out of control as he takes up alcohol and a life of vice to numb the pain. From here the tragic love story becomes tragic love triangle with the entry of Chandrmukhi in the life of Devdas.
It is almost 100 year old novel but steel attracts the adult reader, even today crazy lovers are called Devdas. Any one who has read it can not deny the grasp of writer on the story line. The novel is full of romance, passion & emotions.
Its a legend and will remain legend. Time to time it will again portrait on silver screen as Anurag Kashyap's Dev D.

Written in the early decades of the twentieth century, Devdas written by Sarat Chandra Chatterjee, still does not fail to captivate the readers. The fact that it still inspires movie-makers and is filmed time and again speaks volumes of its class and endurance. First published in Bengali, the tragic tale of Devdas has become synonymous with passionate and intense love.
The protagonist Devdas returns to Calcuttta after completing his studies from abroad and meets his childhood sweet heart Parvati after 12 long years. They both are deeply in love with each other and want to get married but because of the differences in their social classes (Devdas being from a very rich business family whereas Paro belonged to a middle class background), his family does not accept their relationship. Humiliated, Paro’s mother announces that she would marry her daughter to an even richer family and the stunned Paro agrees to marry even an elderly widower. Realizing his mistakes, Devdas apologizes to Paro and asks her to elope with him but she refuses chiding him for his cowardice and vacillation. Grief stricken Devdas falls prey to depression and excessive liquor.
A classic story of unrequited love, Devdas has very real characters searching for something which they can never get. It manages being sensitive and ruthless, tragic and romanitic, emotional and practical as well as complex and simple at the time.

More details Devdas, by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, is India’s very own Romeo and Juliet story, albeit with certain differences. It is one of the most translated love stories in India. Its timeless appeal has led to its adaption on screen in several languages, right from the early 1920s to the 21st century. So much so, that most people know it as a movie rather than a book. But beneath all the famous movies based on it, lies the beautifully written book.
Devdas is a wealthy Brahmin boy, while Paro belongs to both a lower caste and financial strata. They grow up together as neighbors, till Devdas goes away to the city for education. When he returns more than a decade later, Paro believes that their childhood friendship will now culminate in marriage. But Paro’s mother is insulted by Devdas’ family when she suggests the inter-caste alliance. Embittered, she plans to get Paro married off to an even richer man. Paro and Devdas’ love remains unfulfilled, but they promise to each-other that they will meet again before they die. Devdas starts drinking heavily to deal with his loneliness, and visits a courtesan Chandramukhi, who falls in love with him. Sensing his end coming closer owing to ill-health, Devdas sets off to meet Paro for the last time. The story ends on a sad and tearful note.
Sarat Chandra, in his signature style of writing about childhood friendships blossoming into love, brings to light the social divide prevalent in pre-independent India, based on both caste and financial status. Hence Devdas is not a mere love story; it has a strong social message too.
