Official Review
Desis, Dilemmas & More! by Ruchika Mathur is more of a very effective and useful guide book to any Indian looking to travel to the US than a work of fiction. It uses the device of the short story to narrate the 14 singular tales, all inspired by real-life occurrences. At the end of each story, the author's note ensures that solutions/suggestions for each issue are well-dealt with. There is no ambiguity in terms of the target audience too, which makes the reading pretty straight-forward.

The diverse knowledge that the stories carry is very impressive - A married working professional enters US on a dependent visa procured by her husband only to discover that the visa prohibits her from working in the US. A mother accidentally ends up dialing 911 instead of a Delhi phone number and finds herself in an embarrassing situation. Light is also shed on how the Indian concept of vegetarianism is alien to most Americans. Warning is provided on the menace that bed bugs create and precautionary measures advocated.
Problems caused due to casualness in filling emigration forms, matters concerning students, the need to learn household chores beforehand, the importance of medical insurance...The purpose of the stories is clearly to highlight an issue and then troubleshoot to the solution.

A gem of a book, must-have for anyone who is planning to visit the United States of America.

Carelessness might land them in a quandary. Therefore Ruchika Mathur emphasizes on the importance of taking care of all these unavoidable rules. The Department of Homeland Security clearly cautions prospective international students who are freshers or beginners at an American University to make their travel plans in accordance with this rule. Now, what is this rule? One might ask! Well, the rule is that new international students can enter the United States within 30 days of the starting date of their programs ONLY. Hide details

More details Desis, Dilemmas and More by Ruchika Mathur focuses on the cultural and social acclimatization of Indians who travel to the United States for the first time. Therefore it is a fresh read that serves as a checklist and a guide to all those individuals who travel there to study and work or for those individuals whose parents may join them in America. Although non-frivolous, yet eloquently and amusingly written, this book is a compilation of fourteen short stories. Inspired by real-life situations, these stories highlight the quandary faced by many at immigration, university and while traveling across the country. Hide details
