Official Review
Enter the world of relationships: zany, quirky, wicked, harrowing, remorseful, mischievous, sensitive, witty and gut-wrenching. This is what Cocktail: Short Stories about Relations by Vikram Karve illustrates about the various dynamics and flavors of relationships. As the book description suggests that ‘Relationships are like cocktails. Every story is a unique labyrinthine mélange of emotions, shaken and stirred, and, like each cocktail has a distinctive flavor and taste’. A collection of twenty seven stories, each story is unique in its narration and plot.

The book’s narration takes a twist-in-the-tale in the short story titled ‘Cocktail’. It is wicked, funny and hard-to-ignore with Sadhana’s transformation much to her husband, Arun’s consternation and bewilderment. ‘A Lazy Hot Afternoon in Mumbai’ is a revelation of a high-flying executive’s discovery of her ‘true metier’ after a meeting with a painter friend. ‘Best of Both Worlds’ reveals the ethos of a society where individuals believe in not settling for the so-called second-best. Yet they are wistfully unsure of what they truly want because they try to live their lives through their children’s achievements and there is a price to pay.

‘Just Flirting’ is a really funny take on marriages and what people seek in a marriage. ‘Freedom’ is what a lot of readers would identify with and not necessarily the ones in tumultuous or bitter relationships only. It is a surge for individuality and anonymity. ‘Deccan Queen’ is bound to throw the reader into retrospection while ‘Dating and Mating’ is a fun story and has a taste of the eccentric. ‘Love Trap’ is haunting with an element of rawness while ‘Lovedale’ is a tale of love, sorrow and parting. ‘The Miscalculation’ is a disturbing tale that ends in utter disbelief.

There is a lot more to read in this collection of short stories. The storytelling has an abundance of finesse, eloquence, insight and a lucid understanding of the human psyche. Therefore each story is a page-turner and a compelling read indeed!

More details The author has gathered and put together stories which talks about true Love and relationships. He has made an effort to put forth the true picture of love and heart breaks and the effects of divorce on kids and other family members. He has also focused on the human aspects of a career-oriented trend in this generation how it affects the relationship among family members.
The book is good, but at times feels like a fantasy. You can read this book to relax and spend some moment without much stress, but you truly can’t see this as a milestone of Love. The author has made a good effort writing this book and sharing some good stories.

More details Simplistic prose and brevity of thought and wit are how one can describe Cocktail - Short Stories about Relationships by Vikram Karve. There is an air of the urbane in all the stories and finesse in the language. At a time when a lot of authors make an attempt to write predictable maudlin tales of love and relationships with absolutely no panache for language, Cocktail is one to watch out for. Each story in this book stands out due to its twist-in-the-tale ending with a message that is neither preachy nor loud. It sets the pace for observation of human foibles and mental meanderings. More details You just can’t ignore the polish and finesse with which the stories in Cocktail flow. It is a relaxed read, creating a contemporary picture of urban lifestyle in its story and a weave of unfaithfulness, separation, family friction and various other viewpoints stitched into it. Cocktail has been written with great enthusiasm by Vikram Karve, an IIT Delhi pass out, Naval Officer and an Electronics and Communications Engineer, among many other things. Karve is a resident of Pune and the seasoned writer of numerous works of fiction and non-fiction articles for many years now. Going by the response and good reviews Cocktail has garnered, it seems likely that Vikram Karve’s written works will be a regular feature at bookstores for years to come. Hide details

More details A collection of short stories with verve, Cocktail by Vikram Karve is a racy read. Most of the book’s initial short stories last three to four pages. The focus in each of the 27 stories is on the language, lifestyle, and lives of people involved in the most complex of relationships. From estranged parents fighting over their little son to a husband and wife cheating on each other, and a murder pact that ensnares the intended victim in the most unlikely manner – leading to realization and revelation; the writer strengthens the stories with pacy narration and merciless, effective editing.
