There was a time when the world was sweeter....when the women in Beaufort, North Carolina, wore dresses, and the men donned hats.... Every April, when the wind smells of both the sea and lilacs, Landon Carter remembers 1958, his last year at Beaufort High. Landon had dated a girl or two, and even once sworn that he'd been in love. Certainly the last person he thought he'd fall for was Jamie, the shy, almost ethereal daughter of the town's Baptist minister....Jamie, who was destined to ...

More details As this is the first love story I ever read I will forever love this book as I did in my naiive way. A Walk to Remember is a pure and beautiful story about Landon Carter, a young teenager and Jamie Sullivan, his religious and aloof classmate. When Landon is elected student body president, he must have a date for his dance and as fate would have it, he ends up with no other choice but to go with Jamie Sullivan, daughter of Hegbert Sullivan, the church minister of his town. In the school production of a play, written by Mr. Sullivan called the Christmas Angel, Jamie asks Landon to participate and this gives birth to a friendship between the two. When Landon finally realizes his true feelings for Jamie, his world is turned upside down by her answer.
Knowing that Sparks wrote this novel based on his dying sister makes this book a little more close to my heart. Do be warned not to compare the book with its movie version that seriously misses its mark and seems rather obtuse. The book left me in tears and with a dream-like feeling that only comes to me after reading a Sparks novel.

More details Here’s a story of two teenagers who fall in love with each other despite the disparity of their personalities. The story starts with a prologue from Landon Carter at age 57. The remainder of the story takes place when Landon is a 17-year-old high school senior.

Landon lives in the small, religious town of Beaufort, North Carolina. His father, a charismatic congressman, lives in Washington, D.C. The distance between father and son seems growing by the day.
Landon’s father coaxes and pressures him into running for class president. With the help of his best friend Eric Hunter, one of the most popular boys in school, Landon wins the election.
being the student body president, Landon is required to attend the school dance with a date. He asks many girls only to face rejection and excuses. He finally asks Jamie Sullivan, the daughter of Hegbert Sullivan, the Beaufort church minister who accepts his invitation. Though reluctant to be seen with her, Landon ends up appreciating her and confessing that he’s had a great time with her.
After a few days, Jamie asks Landon to participate in the school's production of The Christmas Angel. Though Landon isn’t particularly keen or enthusiastic about it, he agrees. One day, after the rehearsal, Jamie asks Landon to walk her home. This becomes a routine for them, until one day Eric mocks the couple.
Over time, Landon gets to know of Jamie’s activities and people and organizations she helps out at, including an orphanage. He discovers the real girl behind the name and slowly begins to enjoy his time with her.
A day before their first show of The Christmas Angel, Landon yells at Jamie and breaks their friendship. But on the day of the show, on seeing her dressed as the angel he truly admires and falls for her.
Jamie asks Landon if he would help her retrieve the jars containing money collected for the orphans' Christmas presents. When Landon collects the jars, there is only $55.73, but when he gives the money to Jamie, there is $247. Jamie buys gifts for the orphanage, and gives Landon her deceased mother's Bible. They spend Christmas Eve together and as they drive home, Landon realizes his true feelings for her. He also invites her to his house for Christmas dinner. The next day when Landon visits Jamie at her house, they share their first kiss on her porch. He confesses his feelings for Jamie to Hegbert and requests permission to take Jamie to a restaurant on New Year’s eve. That’s where they share their first dance.
a few later, Landon confesses his love for Jamie and she reveals to him that she is dying of leukemia.

The following Sunday, Hegbert announces to his congregation that his daughter is dying. Given her illness, Jamie doesn’t return to school after that.
One night over dinner, Jamie confesses to Landon that she loves him too.
When Jamie is hospitalized requests to be taken home. She wishes to die at home rather than the hospital. Landon’s father helps by providing her with the required medical equipment and doctors (at home) and this gesture bridges the gap between father and son.
One day, while sitting next to Jamie, Landon comes up with an idea. He runs to Hegbert and asks him for permission to marry Jamie.
Though reluctant at first, Hegbert finally gives in. Landon runs back to Jamie and asks, "Will you marry me?"
They are then married in a church full of people (just the way Jamie had always dreamt of) with Hegbert walking Jamie down the aisle. An emotional father-daughter moment brings tears to the reader’s eye.
The book ends with Landon, 40 years later, at age 57. He still loves Jamie and wears her ring. He finishes the story by saying, "I now believe, by the way, that miracles can happen."
A fabulous love story by Nicholas Spark. The movement of the plot and the characters is, I feel, flawless, and definitely heart-touching.
Being a real romantic at heart, this is one story that will always remain closest to my heart.

More details This simple but unforgettable novel depicts the story of Landon’s and Jamie’s first love, people who find themselves unexpectedly thrown together.
Landon Carter is a senior high school student who is not entirely the most popular guy in school, but he knows he is part of the ‘crowd’. But he found himself acquainting with a young lady named Jamie Sullivan, who is the complete opposite of what most young girls at that time looked and acted like. Jamie is a girl who doesn't pay attention to fashion, a selfless person, one of those bible-hugging, crucifix wearing people. Landon and Jamie’s relationship develops beautifully and subtly in the story but there are twists and turns and an untold secret that will change their lives forever.
The book has amazingly funny and heart-warming moments. The characters are real but the story is a little predictable. As always Spark’s simple narrative gets one hooked. A walk to remember at first looks like a simple teenage novel, but on reading it, one is amazed by its contents. It is a heart wrenching account of a young, first love and the choices and steps a person will take to provide another with happiness. It makes one believe in the power of love and that dreams do come true.
