With the number of fiction books being released in the market, it is no surprise that people from all walks of life are trying their hand at writing stories. The purpose behind writing could be to educate, entertain, or simply narrate a tale that they feel deserves to be spoken about. But before any more writers decide to take the plunge we would like to tell you the qualities you need to make it big as a well-read writer.

Discipline: For every writer to make their novel see the light of the day it is necessary for him to be disciplined while writing. In order to succeed the author should write 500 words or more every single day. This should not only be done to take the plot ahead but more so to perfect the craft of writing (writing along with being an art calls for immense practice and expertise, hence making it a craft that needs to be mastered). Author Preeti Shenoy of two National bestsellers, 34 Bubblegums and Candies and Life Is What You Make It says, “For all those who are serious about writing should write at least 1,500 words every day. This will discipline you and help you get better at your craft.”
A love of words and storytelling: English is a rich language, and there is a lot you could do to express yourself well in this language. Playing with words until you find an effective way to express what you want to say is one of the great fun things about writing. Says Kavita Sainath, an avid reader, “I feel that loving the language and enjoying the novel yourself while writing and reading is what makes a good writer. If you cannot love what you write then there is very little chance that someone else will like it too.”
Observation: Writers should be good observers and should see people and events from different perspectives. Reading and re-reading works of other writers and observing how they have described a certain situation is what makes a writer’s narrative effective and interesting.
Dissatisfaction: As a writer you should never be completely satisfied with what you have written – even if it has been revised thoroughly. Every text however well edited can be made better with a little alteration here, a tiny bit of rewriting there. However, you must have enough confidence to decide that it is time to halt the editing and send the manuscript to publishers to get published.
Networking and self promotion: The success of a writer can be determined by how well he networks and promotes himself and his work. For this purpose the author can make use of social networking sites, can physically network by being present at book reading circles and launches etc and speak about his work. After all, there is nothing that works better than word of mouth publicity.

Creativity and Imagination: The need for a sharp imagination is necessary if you want to be a novelist or a short story writer. Non-fiction writers also need to have imagination so that they can ensure that the potential readers find the narrative interesting, easy to imagine and read.
An Awareness of the Market: Although it makes sense that you should write essentially to please yourself, but actually every writer wants to be a hit with other people. So before writing it could be a good idea to do some market research so that you know who to approach with the manuscript, what length your manuscript could be or how it should be presented.
