World Cancer Day

Post by: Kabita Sonowal

February 4, 2013 is World Cancer Day. It is celebrated on this day and month, every year. It is a day to dispel all myths about cancer and take a moment to pause and educate ourselves about cancer, its causes and how to take preventive measures and seek remedies. Today, cancer is curable too; what is required at this moment is the appropriate information to battle and eliminate it.

The Emperor of all Maladies by physician, researcher and award-winning writer, Siddhartha Mukherjee is a highly-informative and engaging read on the history of cancer, how individuals tried to tackle it down the ages and what the world of healthcare holds in store. The description of this book aptly reads, “The Emperor of All Maladies is about the people who have soldiered through fiercely demanding regimens in order to survive—and to increase our understanding of this iconic disease.”

Beating Cancer with Nutrition by Patrick Quillin is another read that focuses on nutrition that can act as a catalyst for cure. The description of this book reads, “The book was developed after working with over 500 cancer patients and organizing 3 international symposiums on the subject. The information contained in BCN is both scientifically backed with references and clinically proven in the hospital with patients. This information helps cancer patients to improve quality and quantity of life. BCN had been translated into Japanese and Chinese and is being translated into Korean. BCN had become a home study continuing education course for registered nurses.”

Therefore it is more imperative than ever in the world of healthcare and society to aim towards the prevention of cancer. It is important to understand that it is not just a concern in the world of medicine; it has far-reaching implications in terms of societal progress and economy. Moreover it is not a lifestyle disease; more than half of the world’s population suffering from cancer is from the developing world. It is time to learn, understand and spread the word.
