Library Etiquette

Post by: Deepti Khanna

No. I am not an aging granny who cringes and lectures students to stop creating a nuisance. Nor am I that lady who sits in the reading hall and continuously does a tch tch when I hear people discussing recipes or boyfriends or the TV soap… But not adhering to norms of social decorum definitely irks me beyond measure. I am not against enjoying or having fun, but doing so in a library in a way other that devouring books is a heinous crime. Here’s a checklist of library etiquette that you should religiously follow:

Don't talk
Whether the library is located on campus or is a privately-run reading hall make sure that you do not disturb fellow readers. Even if someone whispers in the library, the noise can be very disturbing since the library is otherwise quite silent. And believe me these silent continuous hush tones are as irritating as a full-fledged scream. So the next time you are in the library and your phone rings please refrain from discussing about the sick child or the barbaric boss. And if it’s urgent take your conversation to the lobby.

Snack outside
I realize that long days in the library can lead to empty, growling stomachs. But the library is not the place to snack. Eating even a dry meal near the books could lead to spilling on the pages or attracting pests. To add up to the mess, the loud crunching of chips and cucumber can be distracting. So whenever hungry please make the effort of carrying your sandwich and chips to the lobby. Trust me your stomach and brain will be more than happy!

Treat the books with respect
When reading a book borrowed from the library, brainwash yourself to believe that it belongs to a close friend so that you would not want to write notes, underline important paragraphs for later reference. Ensure that if absolutely necessary mark sticky notes that can easily be pulled off when you wish to return the book. And by rule always keep a practice book and pen handy to make notes. And don’t use a pencil to do the marking and tell us that you are going to erase all the marking.

Put it back
Put back the books where you can easily find them. Don’t be selfish and stack them in random places, thinking somebody will mop up after you. After all, you are not strolling in the supermarket where you can keep the box of tuna in the detergent powder section if you suddenly decide against making tuna salad for dinner. If you are really hard pressed on time put them back on the Book Return shelf.

Obey the line
While accessing the library computer to locate books or otherwise, stay in order. Most libraries have a sheet to let you know when it's your turn, but if not don’t try to jump the queue. You might just land up outside the library.

Organize
Keep your papers and books organized while taking notes or reading. Ensure that you make place for others to sit in the library and don't leave papers spread out all over. Be accommodating just as someone has been accommodating to you.

Just keep these simple guidelines in mind when you are in the library and you shall be kind enough not to disturb fellow readers.
