How to select a good parenting book?

Post by: Deepti Khanna

The market’s flooded with books on parenting – Supernanny: How to Get the Best From Your Children, What To Expect The First Year, How To Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk, Spiritual Parenting, The Rules Of Parenting, Progressive Parenting, Smart Parenting … the list is endless. Just Google – parenting books – and your web page will be flooded with so many options, with the results running into several pages. But are most of the parenting books available in the market useful?

Not really. Just because the book ensures parenting with a catchy epithet (there are books on passionate, smart, progressive, sneaky, effective, dynamic… styles of parenting) does not necessarily mean they are good books. Here is a guide to help you make the right choice

Who is the author?
Ideally unless a book has been recommended by another parent, you should  pick up a parenting book written by a psychiatrist or counsellor rather than unknown random people. This is because there are chances that the former will tell you things that you already know. And it is essential that the author must be a parent.

Buy a book with practical solutions
With relationships, especially delicate ones like that of a parent and child, pick up books with easy-to-do practical solutions. It is these small things that matter and keep a relationship alive. Books that prescribe eating and celebrating life together should be picked up as opposed to the ones with complicated terms and solutions.

Making a list
The best way to select a good parenting book is to list what issues would you like to tackle with the help of the book. For instance, it could be generation gap, making time for each other, respecting decisions, etc. if majority of your concerns are addressed in the book, you could pick it up. If not, you might need to scan some more.

Common cultures

It is necessary that the book you pick up should have solutions with common cultural backgrounds. Child rearing differs from country to country. An American parenting book will not address issues faced by Indian parents and the vice versa because there is a vast difference in what is considered normal with respect to behaviour and attitude in the two countries.

Just keep these little things in mind and you shall pick up the better if not the best parenting book available in the market.
