Feluda, Satyajit Ray and the Sandesh Story

Post by: Snehith Kumbla

In 1913, Satyajit Ray’s grandfather Upendrakishore Raychowdhury started a Bengali children’s magazine called Sandesh. Roychowdhury passed away in 1915 and it was his son Sukumar Ray who took over the editorial mantle. Stories interspersed with fun, jokes and information made Sandesh a delightful read in a TV absent generation of readers. Subinoy Ray, Sukumar's younger brother took charge in 1923 when the latter passed away. The magazine traveled a rough road then, it was shut down in 1925, revived in 1929 and again saw the publishing sunset in 1934.

It was in 1961 that Sukumar's son, filmmaker Satyajit Ray and prominent Bengali poet Subhas Mukhopadhyay took over the editorial mantle of the magazine. It was here that Ray's first writing peices were published, the ones that can be read in their translated versions in the collection Indigo.

Neccessity is the need for invention, and in the search for creating brand new content for the magazine, Ray wrote the famous Feluda short stories, first published here. For starters, Feluda is the pet name for Prodosh Chandra Mitra, a fictional private detective, always accompanied by his younger cousin Topesh, the Watson to his Sherlock. 'Da' is the short for 'Dada' or someone elder, and Bengalis always have a alternate pet name for a person apart from the usual name. That is how Felu came to be known as Feluda. Ray also made some popular movies on the adventures, the most poplular and iconic of them is Sonar Kella (The Golden Fortress), 1974.

The complete collection of the Adventures of Feluda are collected in two volumes by Penguin. It is a delightful holiday read. To think that the chain goes back to a certain magazine that Ray's grandfather started, almost a century ago.
