BookChums Birthdays: Harold Robbins

Post by: Snehith Kumbla

Harold Robbins was never a great writer, but he had the knack of attracting the audience through sexually graphic content that was embedded in the main storyline like a gift offering. Ironically, he was one of the largest selling writers of his generation – 750 million copies of his books have been sold in 32 languages.

Robbins invited both controversy and fame through his debut 1948 novel – Never Love a Stranger. Though there is a blend of crime, elements of the thriller and of the noir genre in this first novel, the main selling point of a typical Robbins novel was never in doubt. The story moves at a brisk pace; history and Robbins’ own experience of growing up a Polish-Russian immigrant, brought up by a stepmother and his father was also used in the plot elements often.

(Robbins was born on May 21, 1916. He died in 1997.)
