Needless to say, JLF each year has been an assortment of diverse writings. Day 5, this year, saw American author, Madeline Miller (winner of the 2012 Orange Prize for Fiction) discussing The Song of Achilles with Indian poet and author, Anjum Hasan. The Song of Achilles is a reconstruct of mythical Greece and describes the love affair between Achilles and Patroclus. Miller drew her inspiration from Homer’s Iliad about the relationship between the two warriors. She has highlighted Achilles’ devastation at Patroclus’ death and his hunger for revenge despite the knowledge of his impending death.

Madeline Miller has worked as a Latin and Greek teacher while working on The Song of Achilles for ten years. She received a Bachelors and a Masters degree in Classics from Brown University. She also attended the University of Chicago's Committee on Social Thought and the Yale School of Drama.

Anjum Hasan is an Indian poet and author who was born and raised in Shillong in Meghalaya. Her works include Street on the Hill, Lunatic in my Head and Neti, Neti. She currently lives in Bangalore and is the editor for The Caravan.
