Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) 2013 Specials: Return of a King

Post by: Kabita Sonowal

On January 27, 2013, Jason Burke will introduce William Dalrymple’s latest book titled Return of a King at the JLF. This much-discussed book concentrates on the history of former Khurasan (current-day Afghanistan) from the days of Dost Muhammad and Shah Shuja ul-Mulk, the grandson of the emperor of the Durrani Empire, Ahmad Shah Abdali. Return of a King highlights the British interests in this region, the role of the British East India Company and political strategies in keeping the warring tribes under control, blood-curdling intrigues and murders. The story unfolds from the beginning of the nineteenth century and it also traces the disappearance and recovering of the Kohinoor diamond. One can expect a great session that is compelling, scintillating, interactive and unique.

Jason Burke is a British journalist and he has authored Al-Qaeda: The True Story of Radical Islam, Al-Qaeda: Casting a Shadow of Terror, On the Road to Kandahar: Travels through Conflict in the Islamic World and The 9/11 Wars.

William Dalrymple is a British historian, writer, curator and broadcaster. He has authored In Xanadu, The City of Djinns, From the Holy Mountain, The Age of Kali, White Mughals and Nine Lives among other writings.
