On February 25, team BookChums attended the book launch of Legacy by Sudha Menon, writer and journalist, at Crossword on Senapati Bapat Road in Pune. Legacy is Menon’s latest book; it is a collection of letters from distinguished individuals to their daughters. Published by Random House, India, these letters are warm and inspiring and are an illustration on parenting and conscience. The guests of honor were Mr. Pradeep Bhargava, Director at Cummins India and Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry’s (CII) Western Region; his daughter Pooja and Mr. Ganesh Natarajan, Vice-Chairman and CEO of Zensar Technologies. Both Mr. Bhargava and Mr. Natarajan have contributed to the content of this book.

Sudha Menon said that the ‘rationale’ behind writing this book was a personal journey and a letter to her daughter. She added that nobody wrote letters anymore; unlike the days when she was growing up when her grandparents and father wrote to her. To her, a ‘letter is the most intimate way of saying you love them’. Further this book highlights the essence of daughters chasing their dreams. She completed Legacy in 18 months. The three guests spoke about their relationships with their parents and children. They also discussed how their parents’ stance on ethics, compassion and education are a reflection of who they are as individuals today.

The Foreword of the book by Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw reveals the very flavor of Legacy. Addressing her parents in the foreword, she says, “The most fundamental truth that I learnt from you, Daddy, was this: you have to earn your right over anything you want.” The other writers who have written for the book include Ajay Piramal, Amit Chandra, Captain Gopinath, Chandra Kochhar, Deep Anand, Ganesh Natarajan, Jatin Das, Kishore Biyani, K.V. Kamath, Mallika Sarabhai, Narayana Murthy, Prakash Padukone, P.P. Chhabria, Renuka Ramnath, Sanjeev Kapoor, Shaheen Mistri and Zia Mody. Needless to say, the session was highly interactive and filled with bonhomie. It was followed by a book-signing session and dessert. Sudha Menon is the author of Leading Ladies: Women who Inspire India. She also conducts creative writing workshops for both children and adults.
