Book launch: Dongri to Dubai

Post by: Deepti Khanna

Celebrated journalist and author S Hussain Zaidi was in town to launch his third book, Dongri to Dubai. After the success and applause for lucid storytelling in Black Friday and Mafia Queens of Mumbai, this was certainly one awaited book. The launch was held at Landmark Store. Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta was at the event to promote Zaidi’s release.

S Hussain Zaidi was in town to launch his third book, Dongri to DubaiAt the event, Zaidi the great storyteller, told us all a story; a story of how journalism happened to him, how he looked at journalism back then and what he thought of crime reporting. “I became a crime reporter by chance. My failed business forced me to look for jobs, as I did not have the heart to start another business. I took up this job as a reporter. Initially, I just worked for the money. It was here that I met fellow journalist, who is now my wife, Velly Thevar, who mentored me to take up crime reporting as a profession. I hated it back then as I thought this exhibited the Muslim community in a bad way,” stated Zaidi.

Coming back to the book, Dongri to Dubai, was born from the 15 plus years of journalistic experience Zaidi has had. Sanjay Gupta, the director of upcoming film, Shootout at Wadala and the commercially successful Shootout at Lokhandwala stressed how much the book helped the research of his second film in the series. He said, “While I was filming Shootout at Lokhandwala, I felt a dearth of information on the subject. But with Shootout at Wadala I know so much more about the times that were.”

The audience at the book event was open about their admiration for the research and solid documentation that his book contains. One of them did not appreciate the inclusion of Mandakini (Bollywood actress rumoured to be Dawood’s love interest) in this book, while others loved him for throwing light on the ‘mafia queens of Mumbai’. One such fan of Zaidi’s books enquired whether he was contemplating writing a book on 26X11 terror attacks that wobbled Mumbai. “No I won’t. I choose subjects where much has left to be explored. With 26X11 so much has already been spoken about. My next book will be on David Headley. It should be out late this year.” concluded Zaidi.
