In Memoriam: Tribute to Tennessee Williams

Post by: Kabita Sonowal

“What is the victory of a Cat on A Hot Tin Roof?—I wish I knew... Just staying on it, I guess, as long as she can...”
― Tennessee Williams, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

Tennessee Williams was born on this day in 1911. He stooped to conquer it all; his writings were all about passion, love, promiscuity, explosive emotions, tenacity, and compassion. And there would barely be anybody else who would capture human emotions the way he did. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Glass Menagerie and others are beautiful and heart-wrenching reads on human nature. The Glass Menagerie is a partial reflection of his life; the other plays are also marvelous etchings of human turbulence and all that is skin-deep. In this play, there is an entire feeling of physical inertia and a gloomy hopelessness, yet there is a seething cauldron of emotions in each individual. They hope for a better life and prospects only to watch their desires fade into nothingness.

Here is a tribute to the man who made us fall for love and have a lust for life.
