How to select a book for gifting

Post by: Deepti Khanna

“Books make great gifts because… [they don’t] come in any particular size, so you don’t have to be embarrassed if you bought somebody the wrong size.” –Valerie Bertinelli, actor

With Christmas and New Years being just a few days away, it’s time to show your loved ones how much you care. Be it a parent, spouse, child, friend, in-laws (yes you should gift them too!!! LOL) a thoughtful and useful gift is sure to touch everyone. And gifting books is again a great idea. If selected properly the book is sure to be cherished by the one who has received it. Here’s a guide that will help you decide how to zero in on the right book.

Personality of the reader

While selecting the gift you need to see all the books in the bookstore from the eyes of the person who you are gifting the book to. You both might have entirely different personality traits and likes and dislikes but it is not very difficult to think like the other. If the person likes to be prim and proper then maybe a book on good housekeeping should be good, but if the person is the one who loves fitness, then it can be a fitness guide or the like. Also, for people who are big time into motivational reads you could choose from the host of leadership books being released in the market.

Hobby
If the person you are picking up a gift for is pursuing a hobby big time the book can certainly be related to the person’s interest. If you think something like calligraphy, foreign languages, gardening, gourmet cooking or candle making is playing on the person’s mind then picking up a book is really simple. A wide variety (even budgets) of books with large, attractive are available that are sure to make even a person not-so-interested in the hobby pick up and take notice of them.

Genres of interest

If there are no particular hobbies the person is interested in but is a reader then you can choose from the many genres of books available in the market. Be it political, mystery, thriller, chick-lit, romance, autobiography etc there is a lot to choose from. I personally believe just like each person has a soul-mate, everyone also has at least one book that they’ll enjoy (C’mon I said at least. There is no upper limit).

The situational approach
In case you know a situation your friend is going to be in you could select a book accordingly. It could be a book on travelling abroad for the first time, how to handle a newborn baby (ensure that the person is not too stressed with the amount of advices pouring in or you might be risking your life), dealing with a barbaric boss, there is a book one very situation. And the best part about this category of books is that they are sure to be of help.

Whose the author?
If the person has a favourite author then your job is three-fourth (basically more than half) done. Just pick up a latest release by the author and you are sorted. And the best part is the person will at least appreciate you for being so thoughtful and knowing him/her really well.

Keepsakes

These include poetries, reference books or classics or just any book that you can read over and over again. If your friend is one of those who will admire and love to keep books forever then a nice hardbound keepsake is what you can gift.

So now I hope you agree that gifting book is not a bad idea at all…
