BookChums Theme of the Week - Cartoons

Post by: Kabita Sonowal

Cartoon strips offer comic relief, flights of fantasy and quick reading. As kids, we grew up on fun and rich doses of Chacha Chaudhary, Tinkle, Amar Chitra Katha, Asterix, Peanuts and many others. Newspapers have always carried strips of cartoons of a weekly basis arousing a lot of curiosity to read more. It is said that the history of comics dates back a long way. Scholars hint at the Lascaux Cave paintings as some of the first inspirations for cartoon writing and illustrations.

In the late 1800s, this form of caricaturing and sketching was made popular by Randolphe Topffer in Europe, Richard F. Outcault in the US and Hokusai in Japan. In India, comics go back a long way too. Our mythologies and folk tales provided a colorful platform for comic inspiration. Indrajal comics led the way to more comics and fun characters in India.

This week on BookChums, we celebrate Comics as the theme of the week. Enjoy!
